Axe throwing has been gaining popularity and they’ve been popping up everywhere in the Bay Area so of course Zach and I had to try. To me, it’s the ultimate bonding experience because throwing a very sharp weapon in the air at a bullseye with your love by your side truly signifies trust. It’s quite fun but kind of dangerous at the same time.
We have been wanting to go axe throwing for a while and found a place called Bad Axe Throwing in Daly City which is about an hour north of San Jose or about 15 minutes south from San Francisco. I tried to make reservations ahead of time just in case it was busy but they require at least 4 participants minimum but they have walk-in hours from 1:30 – 3:30 so it all worked out. We were prepared to wait in case all 8 lanes were occupied. When we arrived at the facility we saw the sign but we got a little confused where the entrance was because it led to Kung Fu Silver Dragon Kung Fu as you enter and Bad Axe Throwing was nowhere in sight. A very nice lady from the Kung Fu studio redirected us to go inside and walk down the long hallway to get to the Bad Axe Throwing entrance. It was confusing because the Kung Fu studio occupied the front space and the Axe Throwing place was in the back.
When we finally entered the Bad Axe Throwing space, we were greeted by a nice gentleman who asked us to sign the waiver by scanning the QR code on our phone. We then proceeded to go to our private lanes and gave us a quick lesson on how properly hold the axe, how to stand, and how to throw the three different size axes.
After the quick lesson, Zach and I went to town and just started throwing the axe like it was nobody’s business. It has been a long week for both us and we were ready to release some steam. It got our adrenaline pumping for sure as throwing this heavy axe across a 12 ft long lane onto a giant wooden bullseye makes our blood flowing. Zach’s approach was to start all the way in the back of the lane to build momentum to give it more energy as he releases the axe onto the air. You can hear the loud boom as the axe hits the giant bullseye. My approach was to practice proper form and make sure I was using my upper body to propel the axe to rotate as it flies across the lane. After a few throws, I got the gist of it and threw it as hard as I could and let it land where it landed. I did not have a strategy per se but to have fun and to let the axe just land on the bullseye.
5 reasons why you should try axe throwing:
- It gets your adrenaline pumping -There’s nothing like throwing a sharp weapon to get your blood flowing and adrenaline pumping. We felt like powerful lumberjacks on a mission to hit the bullseye with an axe across a 12 ft lane
- It relieves stress – After a long day or work week, throwing an axe lets you blow off steam. You forget about work as you concentrate on throwing the axe onto the bullseye and most importantly making sure you don’t hurt yourself in the process.
- It’s a great workout – The axe is pretty heavy so you need to put some muscle into it. Holding it with one hand looks good but in reality but that sucker is HEAVY and you need 2 hands to hold it over your head. By holding it onto the air over your head, you get to use your shoulder, warms, back, and legs to propel the axe onto the bullseye
- It’s a great bonding experience – Sharing this experience with your significant other, friends, or colleagues is a great bonding experience as you celebrate your winds and encourage them to try again
- It’s fun! – Axe throwing isn’t an activity that you try every day, it’s new. It’s a great way to sharpen your alertness and mind
Axe throwing was a blast, you should give it a shot to release your inner lumberjack.
